Sister Lucia's Monthly Novena to Our Lady of Fatima

Sister Lucia's Monthly Novena to
Our Lady of Fatima

     On the 4th day of every month, Sister Lucia would pray a special Novena to Our Lady of Fatima in anticipation of the 13th day. The novena included the Memorare and three Hail Marys.

   This month the Novena begins on the FirstSaturday, June 4,  which is also the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We hope you will begin praying the Novena every month!  Your First Saturday devotion also consoles Our Lady's heart and helps bring graces for salvation to those most in need of God's mercy.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

3 Hail Marys...Amen

May 13th - The Rich Content of the Message of Fatima - on the 99th Anniversary

The following is from The World Apostolate of Fatima Spiritual Guide for the Salvation of Souls and World Peace.  This blog post will also appear the World Apostolate of Fatima Hawaii Division Blog.

The message of Fatima which springs from the apparitions of Our Lady, is a solid blueprint for life.  It cries out to be put into practice for the good of the world, and the salvation of souls.

Its teachings are in harmony with the Gospel, calling to mind the following elements with new emphasis:

-  The mystery of the Blessed Trinity;

-  The providence of God, which directs and governs the world and presides over the events of human history;

-  The omnipotence and omniscience of God, Who knows and realizes all things according to His exalted designs.  It foretold future events and revealed miraculous signs to prove the truth of God's predictions;

-  God, Who rewards or punishes, according to the good or evil done, though He is ever merciful towards sinners;

-  The reality of heaven, hell and purgatory;

-  The existence of Guardian Angels, not only of individuals but also of nations;

-  The real presence of Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and the necessity and value of Holy Communion;

-  The real presence of Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and the necessity and value of Holy Communion;

-  Sanctity as a condition of true happiness even on earth, and docility and correspondence to grace, the mysterious mixture of divine action and human effort;

-  The reality of sin as an offense against God with its tragic consequences for sinners and nations;

-  The flight from sin and amendment of life as an indispensable condition of the sate of grace;

-  The Christian solidarity of the Mystical Body of Christ;

-  The intercession of the Mother of God as a powerful mediatrix and dispenser of grace;

-  The necessity of penance and prayer, with their value of atonement and intercession;

-  The love of the Heart of Jesus and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary - the great revelation of Fatima;

-  The importance of Marian devotions, particularly, the excellence and efficacy of the Rosary, the new devotion of the first Saturdays, and the value of Consecration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary;

-  The powerful action of grace, which so transformed the three little children at Fatima and led them to such a close union with God.

-  Russia, simultaneously a scourge that punishes the sins of the world, and the object of Divine Mercy, by the promise of its conversion through the intermediary of the Heart of Mary;

-  The sanctification of the family, in imitation of the vivid scene of the last apparition;

-  Devotion to the Holy Father and the and the necessity of purity and modesty;

-  The final triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Our Lady of Fatima and Muslims

"Many believe that Mary's appearance at Fatima can be of great importance in the Christian outreach to the Muslim people. Archbishop Sheen, for example, saw in our Lady's choice of Fatima a great significance for her message. She did not come down from heaven to the only place in all of Portugal with a Muslim name simply to convert Russia, he said. Unless we have the conversion of hundreds of millions of Muslims, there will never be world peace." - Father Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R.

Our Lady of Fatima - Approved Apparitions

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Fatima!

The following is a talk given by Father Eric Bowman, pastor of the Church of the Transfiguration, in West Milton, Ohio.  It is a good talk on Our Lady's approved apparition and I hope you take the time to watch and listen. Note: I recently became good friends with Father Eric when he spend time here in our islands.  While in Hawaii, Father Eric gave an interesting talk on the Angel of Peace's message to the three shepherd children.

This particular talk will be of great interest to those wanting to learn more about Our Lady's appearance to Catherine Laboure, the Miraculous Medal and that time period.

The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue Comes to Hawaii

"The role of Mary is to lead us to Jesus"

As previously reported here, Our Lady of Fatima's pilgrim statue is visiting the Hawaiian islands this month.  Yesterday, we were privileged to see this beautiful statue of our Lady at Star of the Sea in Honolulu.  Her custodian Patrick Sabat accompanies her all of the world.  There are two statues in Fatima of our Lady.  One is permanently in Fatima and the other one is the pilgrim statue.  This particular statue has actually wept tears.  To the faithful, it is a sign that our blessed mother is very sorrowful.  So much sin and suffering abound in the world.  People are turning away from her son.  However, since the start of her visit in Hawaii a week ago, the statue has not wept.

In 1972 this statue wept.  Just two months later Roe v. Wade made the crime of abortion legal in the United States.

"The world at prayer is a world of peace." - Father Patrick Peyton

The statue is on a teaching mission as it travels the world.  We are asked to respond to Mary's request at Fatima.  She asked us for prayer. "Pray a great deal for many soul's go to hell because there is no one there to pray for them or make sacrifices for them."

"The white square of Fatima vs. the Red Square of Russia." - Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

We are called to be holy.  "To do great things with great love."  Just doing our ordinary duties can be holy.

Patrick Sabat challenging us "Are you willing to accept he suffering God wishes for you."

We should accept this suffering for the conversion of sinners.  Just like the little shepherd children at Fatima did.

"My tears speak louder than my words" - Blessed Mother 1984

"Anyone who looks upon the face of my holy statue will
receive from my son and I {sic} an imprint of His heart and soul and will have peace of mind."
- Virgin Mary 1981

I would like to take this opportunity to share a portion of the latest email I, as a division leader, received from the World Apostolate of Fatima:

In 1989 the Blue Army USA address list included over 500,000 supporting members; 10 years later that had dropped to 125,000; by 2009 I was told we had only around 10,000 members left. The principal reason for this rapid decrease in supporting members seems to be the fall of the Soviet Union and consequent elimination of the threat of a communist takeover of the world and possible nuclear war. Also, perhaps more significantly, our culture has undergone a rapid change from Christianity to agnosticism, due in large part to the spread of the "errors of Russia" foretold by Our Lady of Fatima if her requests were not fulfilled. Even "devout" Catholics seem to pray much less than 50 years ago and the daily Rosary is quite out of fashion even among Catholics who consider themselves devout.

Five years ago we tried a new approach to growing WAF membership in the less devout Catholic atmosphere of our country. Through the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue Program we invited Catholics to make a pledge to pray every day for the conversion of sinners and to offer our daily crosses (everything we wish didn't happen in our lives, great or small) as reparation for sin and for the conversion of sinners, using the formula given to us by Our Lady at Fatima. In just five years our membership has grown by over 51,000 new members!

The Blue Army/WAF Pledge is still a principal goal of our apostolate (everyone in a leadership position is expected to sign the Pledge) but the simpler pledge of prayer and reparation for the conversion of sinners -- strongly requested by Our Lady -- is now considered sufficient for new members. This allows us to bring in new members who don't feel ready to sign the WAF Pledge but are willing to pray and make daily reparation for the conversion of sinners, so that we can form them in the Message of Fatima and motivate them to make the WAF Pledge. In this regard, the new members are like novices, who need to learn about the Message and grow into the spiritual life requested of us all at Fatima. We can only spiritually form those we can reach, and the simpler introductory pledge has proven effective in bringing in new members who aren't yet ready to make the WAF Pledge. It's also important to remember that Our Lady revealed that peace can be obtained only by converting sinners through prayer and reparation...
Reminder: Tomorrow is a First Saturday. Please take this opportunity to answer our Lady's call to Prayer: Penance: Rosary and Reparation.

First Saturday and Local News, the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue is coming to Hawaii

November 1st is First Saturday.  To learn more about Our Lady's request for 5 First Saturday devotion, please visit the World Apostolate of Fatima site.

The Diocese of Honolulu is privileged and honored to have Our Lady's statue visit select parishes in the Diocese of Honolulu from November 1 through 22. What you likely do not know is that the statue began operating under the auspice of The World Apostolate of Fatima, USA on September 1, 2014. The apostolate is an International Association of the Faithful under The Pontifical Council for the Laity - the only Fatima organization which speaks in the name of the Church and with the authority of the Church on Fatima.

It is my understanding that  America Needs Fatima is the organizer of this statue tour which a local Catholic woman has been working on since some time before the transfer of the statue's management. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for the wonderful work she has done.

To see the tour schedule, please click: here

We hope you will find time to visit Our Lady at one or more of the parishes, and that you will bring your family and friends as well.

Please consider becoming a member of the apostolate. You can join here: here

The custodian of the statue will be recruiting new members at all the churches as well. To leran more about Fatima, Our Lady's message, and the work of the apostolate, please click here: here.

Hymns for Our Lady of Fatima's Feast Day

Fatima Ave

In Fatima's Cove
on the thirteenth of May,
the Virgin Maria
appeared at midday.

Refrain:  Ave, Ave, Ave Maria!
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria!

The Virgin Maria
surrounded by light
God's Mother is ours,
for she give us this sight. (Refrain)

The world was then suffering
from war, plague and strife
and Portugal mourned
for her great loss of life. (Refrain)

To three shepherd children
the Virgin then spoke
a message so hopeful,
with peace for all folk. (Refrain)

With sweet Mother's pleading,
she asked us to pray.
Do penance, be modest,
the Rosary each day. (Refrain)

We all must remember
our Lady's request
do all that she asks for,
obey her behests. (Refrain)

Queen of the Rosary

The Mother of God came down from the skies,
surrounded with light from Paradise.
She spoke to three children,
"Fear not, come to me
for I am the Queen of the Rosary."

From May through October
the children did see,
the Mother of God o'er
the little helm tree.
So many show no love
for Jesus and me,
said Mary the Queen of the Rosary.

She pleaded dear children
do penance and pray
for Russia's conversion and
peace in our day.
The best way to do this,
most pleasing to me,
is praying each day my Rosary.

The sick and the crippled, the
blind and the lame,
o'er many long miles to Fatima came.
They listened with hope to their
dear Mother's plea,
my children please pray my Rosary.

The sun whirling down from its place in the sky,
was Mary's great sign which none can deny.
The powers of evil were broken that day,
All hail to the Queen of the Rosary.

Our Lady of Fatima The Sixth Apparition of Our Lady

Our Lady of Fatima, Adoration Chapel, Blue Army Shrine, Washington, NJ
October 13, 1917

"We left home quite early, expecting that we would be delayed along the way.  Masses of people thronged the roads.  The rain fell in torrents.  My mother, her heart torn with uncertainty as to what was going to happen, and fearing ti would be the last day of my life, wanted to accompany me.

On the way, the scenes of the previous month, still more numerous and moving, were repeated.  Not even the muddy roads could prevent these people from kneeling in the most humble and suppliant of attitudes.  We reached the holmoak in the Cova da Iria.  Once there, moved by an interior impulse, I asked the people to shut their umbrellas and say the Rosary. A little later, we saw the flash of light, and then Our Lady appeared on the holmoak.

'What do you want of me?'

"I want to tell you that a chapel is to be built here in my honor.  I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue always to pray the Rosary every day.  The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to their homes."

'I have many things to ask you: the cure of some sick persons, the conversion of sinners, and other things..."

'Some yes, but not others.  They must amend their lives and ask forgiveness for their sins.'

Looking very sad, Our Lady said:

'Do not offend the Lord our God any more, because He is already so much offended.'

Then opening her hands, she made them reflect on the sun, and as she ascended, the reflection of her own light continued to be projected on the sun itself...

After Our Lady had disappeared into the immense distance of the firmament, we beheld St. Joseph with the Child Jesus and Our Lady robed in white with a blue mantle, beside the sun.  St. Joseph and the Child Jesus appeared to bless the world, for they traced the Sign of the Cross with their hands,.  When, a little later, this apparition disappeared, I saw Our Lord and Our Lady; it seemed to me that it was Our Lady of Dolors.  Our Lord appeared to bless the world in the same manner as St. Joseph had done.  This apparition also vanished, and I saw Our Lady once more, this time resembling Our Lady of Carmel.

(with ecclesiastical permission)

O Mary,
I consecrate myself to you,
Daughter of the Father,
Spouse of the Holy Spirit,
Mother of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.
I will wear your Scapular always as a sign of this consecration,
and I offer my daily Rosary and the
fulfillment of the obligations of each day
in reparation for sins,
particularly those against your Immaculate Heart,
and against the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.
I desire to be ever more deeply united to His Heart,
in the intimacy of your own
Immaculate Heart, with each passing
moment of my life unto the last.  Amen

FATIMA IN FOCUS

Brother John M. Samaha, S.M.

          On May 13 we mark the 95th anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima in 1917.
Like the apparitions of Our Lady at Guadalupe and at Lourdes, her apparitions at Fatima are known far and wide across the world in both religious and secular circles.  To appreciate more clearly the impact of Mary’s appearances at Fatima, it is important for us to know something about the conditions in Portugalat the time of the appearances in 1917.  The events need to be placed in historical context.

The historical, political, social circumstances
For centuries Portugal had distinguished itself by its zeal for the spread of the Christian faith. But in the eighteenth century the government was influenced by anti-religious ideas and, from that time, Freemasonry set about de-Christianizing the country. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the moral and religious situation in Portugal was abysmal. In 1911, the separation of Church and State became official. The years from 1910 to 1913 were years of terror: priests and bishops were imprisoned or exiled; religious orders were suppressed; almost all the seminaries were closed and confiscated; missions languished or were abandoned. Freemasonry was in control. From 1910 to 1926 Portugal experienced 16 revolutions with 40 changes of government officials.

The apparitions and their message
Then, on May 13, 1917, a shining Lady appeared to three little shepherds near Fatima, a Portuguese village. They were Jacinta, seven years old; Francisco, her brother, nine years old; their cousin, Lucia, ten years old. The brilliant Lady encouraged them to pray the rosary, a summary of the Gospel, and to offer acts of penance. Then she asked them to return on the 13th of the next five months. The children were faithful in coming, except for August 13, for the mayor, a Mason, had them imprisoned at that time. He had threatened to cast them into a caldron of boiling oil if they did not reveal the secret confided to them by the Lady.

At each meeting, the Lady revealed to them a little more of God’s designs. She foretold future misfortunes which they were to keep secret for the time being, and which were recently revealed by the sole survivor, Lucia. These had to do with an even more terrible war than the current one of 1914-1918. The Lady asked for the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, for only through her could the aid of God come to the world. On the last apparition, that of October 13, she promised a great miracle which everyone would be able to see.

Curiosity drew ever larger numbers that accompanied the little visionaries to each meeting: there were some 25,000 to 30,000 on September 13; about 70,000 on October 13.
That day, on which the great miracle promised by the Virgin Mary was to take place, rain poured all morning. The crowd was soaked.  But at noon the skies cleared. Mary appeared to the three shepherds and revealed her name: Lady of the Rosary. She asked that people be converted and pray. Then, in the sight of the 70,000 spectators, the sun, which had just appeared through the clouds, began to rotate or spin three times.  Each rotation lasted three or four minutes, illuminating the trees, the crowd, the earth, with all the colors of a rainbow. Then it zigzagged in the sky and descended as though to fall into the crowd. People fell to the ground crying for mercy. Then the sun returned to its proper place. The spectators noticed that their clothes were completely dry.
News of this miracle, witnessed by 70,000 people, including a number hostile to religion, spread like wildfire throughout Portugal and made a tremendous impression. The material miracle was but a sign of another miracle, the enlightenment of souls and the conversion of the country.

The aftermath
Less than two weeks after the last apparition, a first sign of a new attitude manifested itself in the protest by an influential antichristian newspaper against a sacrilegious attack by a group of sectarians at Fatima. In 1918, the bishops were recalled from exile and were able to hold a meeting at Lisbon. The military chaplaincy was reinstated and relations with the Holy See reestablished. At that point, the Masonic lodges had the president of the Republic of Portugalassassinated. They sought to reinstate the control of the anticlericals, but their efforts failed.

In 1926, the first National Council was held. In 1928, the renowned Oliveira Salazar rose to power. He was an outstanding Catholic and a great statesman, the providential man for the financial, civil, political, and religious restoration of Portugal.
Come 1936, a new great danger menaced the land. The Russian Bolshevists decided to establish atheistic communism in Spain and Portugal in order to spread it more successfully in the east and in the west, throughout all Christian Europe. We know what success they had in Spain. Portugal seemed unable to resist their activity, organized with satanic cleverness. To dispel the danger, the bishops saw salvation only in the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1936, they promised, by what was termed an anticommunist oath, to make a pilgrimage of the entire nation to Fatima if Portugal were preserved from the peril which was threatening it.

 While, on the other side of the frontier in Spain, the “Reds” were massacring, profaning, pillaging, burning priests and men and women religious and churches and convents, trying to extirpate the last vestiges of Christianity, Portugal enjoyed the most profound peace. And so, in 1938, an enormous pilgrimage of a half-million faithful was on route to Fatima to thank the Virgin for her miraculous protection.
In 1940, Portugal signed with the Holy See the most perfect concordat, from the Christian point of view, ever signed in recent times. The faith is proclaimed throughout the entire country with pride, the sacraments are frequented, Catholic Action flourished, ecclesiastical vocations multiplied.  In eight years the number of religious had quadrupled. In keeping with the prediction of the Virgin at Fatima, the Second World War was much more horrible than the first. Yet, though most of the nations of the world were involved in the indescribable calamities and anguish, Portugal continued with its tranquil life under the protection of Mary.

The Church’s action
The ecclesiastical inquiry into the facts of Fatima was opened in November of 1917.  However, because of circumstances, a verdict was rendered only thirteen years later, on October 13, 1930. Meanwhile, pilgrimages continued to arrive, always more numerous, and usually on the 13th of each month. Cures were taking place. In 1926, a board of review was established similar to the one at Lourdes. More than a thousand cures, scientifically unexplainable had been registered by 1955.

On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima, the ecclesiastical authority judged the moment suitable for revealing in part what Our Lady of the Rosary had asked Lucia to keep secret for the time being.

In his radio message of October 31, 1942, to the pilgrims gathered at Fatima, Pope Pius XII consecrated the Church and the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He renewed this consecration the following December 8 in Rome. The bishops of the whole world also made this consecration for their individual dioceses on March 28, 1943. We know that the Pope Pius XII confided to Cardinal Tedeschini that he himself had seen the solar phenomenon on October 30 and 31, and on November 1 and 8, 1954, on the occasion of the definition of the dogma of the Assumption.

The impact of Fatima
The message of Fatima has been heard in Portugal, and Mary’s goodness has marvelously repaid it. Has it been heard in the rest of the world?  Certainly not enough.  Otherwise wars among nations by armies, and “cold wars,” and fratricides within countries would have ended long ago.

However, not all have turned a deaf ear. The message of Fatima has been received in part, at least, by a great number of Christians.  Devotion to the rosary continues to gain favor and reaches into many countries. As has been said, all the dioceses of the world have been consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by the bishops.   The visits of the Pilgrim Virgin statues have been received with tremendous enthusiasm not only by Catholic populations, but by Protestants and Muslims as well.

 The message of Fatima has moved many and has contributed to making our era an Age of Mary. It has not spoken its final word. What that word will be depends on the cooperation which Our Lady of Fatima receives from us.  She extends this call and invitation to each of us.

The words of Franz Werfel about Lourdes apply also to Fatima: “For those who believe, no explanation is necessary.  For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible.”

Novena: Our Lady of Fatima May 3-12

OUR LADY OF FATIMA

The Nine Day Novena To Our Lady Of Fatima

Say for nine days followed by Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be 3 times each

Most Holy Virgin, who has deigned to come to Fatima to reveal to the three little
shepherds the treasures of graces hidden in the recitation of the Rosary, inspire
our hearts with a sincere love of this devotion, so that by meditating on the mysteries
of our redemption that are recalled in it, we may gather the fruits and obtain the
conversion of sinners, the conversion of Russia, and this favor that I so earnestly seek,
(mention your request) which I ask of you in this novena, for the greater glory of God,
for your own honor, and for the good of all people. Amen.

October 13th - the Day the Sun Danced

Photo on the day of the last apparition
Picture source

13 October 1917

The proclamation of a public miracle caused the most intense speculation throughout Portugal, and the journalist Avelino de Almeida, published a satirical article on the whole business in the anti-religious newspaper O Seculo. People from other parts of the country descended, in their tens of thousands, on the Cova, despite the terrible storm that lashed the mountain country around Fatima, on the eve of the 13th. Many pilgrims went barefooted, reciting the rosary as they went, all crowding into the area around the Cova, as by midmorning the weather again turned bad and heavy rain began to fall...

The Miracle of the Sun

At the same time the vast crowd saw a true miracle. The black clouds parted, and the sun became visible, looking like a dull grey disc that could be looked at directly quite easily. In O Seculo Avelino de Almeida would adopt a very different tone from his earlier satirical article on Fatima:

"...one could see the immense multitude turn towards the sun, which appeared free from clouds and at its zenith. It looked like a plaque of dull silver and it was possible to look at it without the least discomfort. It might have been an eclipse which was taking place. But at that moment a great shout went up and one could hear the spectators nearest at hand shouting: "A miracle! A miracle!" Before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was Biblical as they stood bareheaded, eagerly searching the sky, the sun trembled, made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws - the sun "danced" according to the typical expression of the people. ...

MARY, FATIMA, AND ISLAM

Does Mary Bridge Islam and Christianity?

Brother John M. Samaha, S.M.

Non-Muslims generally harbor a pejorative view of Islam. This presentation offers a different perspective, a Marian outlook espoused by the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in his book, The World’s First Love, and shared by other devotees of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mary in the Muslim holy book
Contemporary interest in Islam and the Qur’an, its sacred book, runs high.
Among the queries raised concerning the Qur’an is the place Mary, the Mother of Jesus, occupies in Islam. For the past two millennia people have given many faces to Mary. Some of the most impressive images of her are found in the Qur’an. And ample evidence exists that the sources of its Marian references are found in earlier Christian traditions.

Mary and her son Jesus the prophet have a privileged place in the Qur’an. Mary is the only female whose name is cited. Her name is repeated frequently. The expression, “Jesus son of Mary” appears 13 times, and “Jesus, the Messiah, son of Mary,” is found three times. About 45 times we find Mary’s name or references to it.

According to the Qur’an, God made Mary and Jesus a sign, a witness to faith. “And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent” (Sura 23:50; Sura 21:91).
Both the Qur’an and the entire Islamic tradition consider Mary the most blessed and prominent of women. This belief reaches back to Muhammad as noted in Musnad by Ibn Hanbal. The founder of Islam placed Mary above even his daughter Fatimah, and said Fatimah would have been highest among women were it not for Mary.

Christianity and Islam are both missionary faiths originating among Semitic peoples. They have this in common: belief in one God, who is just, merciful, omnipotent, omniscient, and who acts in history. Accepting Jesus as prophet and Messiah, Islam thus elevates his mother, Mary, to a special position and role.

Islam’s creed

Islam is the only great post-Christian religion of the world. Since it originated in the seventh century under the leadership of Muhammad, it was possible to include some elements of Christianity and Judaism along with some customs of Arabia.

Islam seems to use the doctrine of the unity of God, his majesty and his creative power, to reject Christ as the Son of God. Not understanding the notion of the Trinity, Muhammad recognizes Christ as a prophet and announces himself, that is, Muhammad.

Christian Europe, the West, barely escaped eradication at the hands of the early Muslim jihadists. At various times the Muslims were repulsed near Tours, Vienna, Lepanto and other areas. The Church across North Africa was destroyed by Muslim invasions. Presently Islam is again on the rise and flexing its power.

If Islam is a heresy, which Hilaire Belloc declared it to be, it is the only heresy that has never declined. Rather, it has rebounded. Other heresies experienced a period of vigor and influence, but later declined and lapsed into doctrinal decay at the death of the leader, and eventually faded away as a social movement. Islam, on the contrary, endured and has not declined in numbers or in the loyalty of its followers.

On the surface of things, the missionary efforts of the Church with Muslims have failed. They seem almost unconvertible. Muslims believe they have the final and definitive revelation of God and that Jesus Christ was only a prophet announcing Muhammad, the last of God’s real prophets.

Currently, the hatred of Muslim countries toward the West is becoming hatred against Christianity itself. There is still grave danger that the temporal power of Islam may return and bring with it the menace that will overcome the West that has ceased to be Christian, and affirm itself as the great anti-Christian world power. Muslim literature says, “When the locust swarms darken countries, they bear on their wings these words in Arabic: We are God’s host, each of us has 99 eggs, and if we had 100, we should lay waste the world, with all that is in it.”

The problem is how to prevent the hatching of the hundredth egg. Some believe firmly these fears concerning the Muslims will not be realized. They believe that Islam will eventually turn to Christianity, and in a way that missionaries do not expect. These Christians believe that this will happen not through the teachings of Christianity, but through inviting the Muslims to veneration of the Mother of God. This is their line of reasoning.

Role of Mary

The Qur’an, the Muslim bible, contains many passages about the Blessed Virgin Mary. It speaks of her Immaculate Conception and the Virgin Birth. The third chapter details the history of Mary’s family in a genealogy that goes back through Abraham, Noah and to Adam. Comparing the Qur’an’s description of Mary’s birth with the apocryphal gospel version reveals a similarity that indicates Muhammad probably depended on the latter. Both books describe the old age and sterility of Mary’s Mother, Ann. When Ann conceives Mary, she says in the Qur’an, “O Lord, I vow and consecrate to you what is already within me. Accept it from me.” When Mary is born, her mother says, “I consecrate her with all her posterity under your protection, O Lord, against Satan.”

The Qur’an makes little mention of Joseph, but the Muslim tradition appreciates him. Joseph asks Mary, who is a virgin, how she conceived Jesus without a father. Mary responds: “Do you not know that God, when he created the wheat had no need of seed, and that God by his power made the trees to grow without the help of rain? All that God had to do was to say. ‘So be it,’ and it was done.”

The Annunciation, Visitation, and Nativity are also included in the Qur’an. Angels are depicted accompanying our Blessed Mother and saying, “Oh, Mary, God has chosen you and purified you, and elected you above all the women of the earth.” In the 19th chapter alone are 41 verses about Jesus and Mary. The defense of the virginity of Mary is so strong and clear in the fourth book of the Qur’an that it attributes the condemnation of the Jews to their monstrous calumny against the Virgin Mary.

Fatimah

For Muslims, Mary is the true Sayyida (Lady). In their creed only Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, would rival her. After the death of Fatimah, Muhammad wrote, “Thou shall be the most blessed of all women in Paradise, after Mary.” In a variation of this text, Fatimah says, “I surpass all the women, except Mary.”

This highlights another point; namely, why our Blessed Mother in the 20th century should have revealed herself in the insignificant village of Fatima, Portugal, so that all future generations will know her as Our Lady of Fatima. Because nothing happens without divine reason, some believe the Virgin Mary chose to be known as Our Lady of Fatima as a pledge and sign of hope to the Muslim people, and as an assurance, that they who show her great respect will one day accept her divine Son too.

Evidence to support these views is found in the history of Muslim occupation of Portugal for centuries. When they were finally driven out of Portugal, the last Muslim ruler had a beautiful daughter named Fatimah. She fell in love with a Catholic young man. For him she not only stayed behind when the Muslims left, but she also embraced Catholicism. Her young husband loved her so much that he changed the name of the town where he lived to Fatima. Consequently the very place where Our Lady appeared in 1917 bears a historical connection to Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad.

The relationship of Our Lady of Fatima to Muslims is evident in the enthusiastic reception Muslim people in Africa, India, and elsewhere offered to the pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima. They attended prayer services in honor of her and allowed religious processions and prayers in front of their mosques. In Mozambique some Muslims became Christians soon after the statue of Our Lady of Fatima was erected.

A half-century ago Archbishop Sheen wrote: “I believe that the Blessed Virgin chose to be known as Our Lady of Fatima as a pledge and a sign of hope to the Muslim people, and as an assurance that they, who show her so much respect, will one day accept her divine Son, too. Mary is the portal for Muslims to accept Christ.”

In a number of countries Muslims frequent Marian shrines to pray and to honor Sayyida.

Christians and Muslims in Lebanon share the feast of the Annunciation as an official national holiday in a spirit of dialogue and of mutual understanding and respect.

In an effort to show a common ground between Christians and Muslims, an Australian imam named his house of worship in the sheep country between Melbourne and Geelong the Virgin Mary Mosque. This was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on May 27, 2007. “Let us prove that Christianity and Islam have many things in common,” said the blind Somali named Sheik Isse Musse. “We both revere the Virgin Mary. Generally Muslims name their schools, their mosques, their streets, everything after men. Let us show there is nothing wrong in naming a mosque after a person like Mary.” He added, “Some people could not digest it, but I kept explaining. Is not the Virgin Mary mentioned in the holy Qur’an? Isn’t she a very important and pious person? Yes. So what is stopping us giving her name to our mosque?”

Missionary challenge

Increasingly we will see that the Christian missionary apostolate among the Muslims will be successful in the measure that it preaches Our Lady of Fatima. Mary signals the advent of Christ, bringing Christ to the people before Christ himself is born. It is sound apologetics, then, for our missionary effort to begin with something the people already accept. Because Muslims are devoted to Mary, our missionaries wisely endeavor to enlarge that devotion with the realization that Our Lady will bring Muslims along the rest of the journey to her divine Son. She never accepts any devotion for herself, but always brings the devotee to her Son. As those who lose devotion to her lose belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ, so those who intensify devotion to her gradually acquire that belief.

Many missionaries, in Africa especially, have already broken down the bitter hatred and prejudice of Muslims against Christians by their works of charity, their schools and hospitals, and other social services.

It remains now to employ this Marian approach: to interpret chapter 41 of the Qur’an to show them it was taken from the Gospel of St. Luke and that Mary cannot be seen as the most blessed of women if she had not borne the Savior of the world. If Judith and Esther were prefigures of Mary in the Old Testament, we may assume that Fatima herself was a post-figure of Mary.

Let us pray that Muslims acknowledge that, if Fatima gives place in honor of Mary, the reason is that Mary is different from all other mothers of the world and that without Jesus she would be nothing. May they find refuge in the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was given to us by God himself.

Mary is clearly a bridge between Islam and Christianity.

FATIMA IN FOCUS

On May 13 the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Fatima.
Like the apparitions of Our Lady at Guadalupe and at Lourdes, her apparitions at Fatima are known far and wide across the world in both religious and secular circles. To appreciate more clearly the impact of Mary’s appearances at Fatima, it is important for us to know something about the conditions in Portugal at the time of the appearances in 1917.

At that point, the Masonic lodges had the president of the Republic of Portugal assassinated.

First Saturday Devotion

Picture source

On June 13, 1917, when she appeared to three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal, the Most Holy Mother of God told Lucia dos Santos, " Jesus wishes to make use of you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. I promise salvation to those who embrace it, and these souls will be loved by God like flowers placed by me to adorn His throne."

The next month, on July 13, the Blessed Virgin Mary showed the children a terrifying vision of hell. Then she said, "You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save the, God wishes to establish int he world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace...I shall come to ask for...the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays..."

Our Lady came to Lucia again as she promised, on December 10, 1925, with the Child Jesus in the Dorothean convent at Pontevedra, Spain. She revealed a heart encircled by thorns. The Child Jesus said: "Have compassion on the heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation."

Conditions:

Our Lady spoke next, saying: "Look, my daughter, at my heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for fifteen minutes while mediating on fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me."

Why Five Saturdays:

Christians have always honored the Blessed Virgin on Saturday because of her constant faith in Jesus on that first Holy Saturday before the Resurrection.

According to Sister Lucia, five first Saturdays of reparation were requested to atone for the ways people offend the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

1. attacks upon Mary's Immaculate Conception;
2. attacks against her Perpetual Virginity;
3. attacks upon her Divine Maternity and the refusal to accept her as the Mother of all mankind;
4. for those who try to publicly implant children's hearts indifference, contempt and even hatred of this Immaculate Mother and
5. for those who insult her directly in her sacred images.
