John Wayne - Catholic

Pilar and John Wayne
John Wayne was always a favorite at our home growing up. I guess it was because my mother had always been a big fan of his. It may have been because she was proud of the fact that his wife at the time was Peruvian Pilar Pallette Wayne. It may have also been because my Chinese grandfather, who as a young boy sought refuge in Peru while escaping from Communist China, actually had the privilege one day of showing John Wayne around his property in Peru. My grandfather owned a large lumber mill and I believe that is where the "Duke" visited.

As much as I would like to believe it was the Peruvian connections that made John Wayne a favorite of our family, I have to admit it was the story that my brothers and sisters heard very often...that John Wayne converted to Catholicism on his death bed. Interestingly enough, that same Chinese grandfather, who had the privilege of spending a day with John Wayne and who came from a Buddhist background, also converted to Catholicism on his deathbed.

These memories came tumbling on as I read the following articles:

Feast of St. Augustine

St. Augustine

Prayer on Finding God after a Long Search

Too late have I loved you,
O Beauty so ancient, O Beauty so new,
too late have a I loved you!
In my weakness
I ran after the beauty
of the things you have made.
You were with me,
and I was not with you.
The things you have made kept me from you--
the things which would have no being
unless they existed in your!

You have called,
you have cried out,
and you have pierced my deafness.
You have radiated forth,
you have shined out brightly,
and yo have dispelled my blindness.
You have sent forth your fragrance,
and I have breathed it in,
and I long for you.
I have tasted you,
and I hunger and thirst for you.
You have touched me,
and I ardently desire your peace.

For Students Homeschooled or Not: Why St. John Bosco Matters

Don Bosco and Boys

As another school year begins it is a worthy endeavor to contemplate the teaching and ‘parenting’ skills of John Bosco, a priest who understood that faith and learning go hand in hand 24/7. His example is one that serves for all families, but even more for those that have chosen to homeschool. He was innovative, as anxious to learn as he was to teach, and fully aware that hard work needed to be mixed with quality play.

Francis Bosco was a widower with a son and a dependent mother, who he cared for on his small, poor farm. He married a woman by the name of Margaret Occhiena, who embraced the family and made their humble surroundings into a real home with love and warmth. They became parents to two sons, Joseph, and two years later, John. Then, when the younger boy himself was two, Francis died of pneumonia. Margaret, with little education herself, was dedicated to teaching her children about God. Despite the fact they had very little, she was always able to see the good in what they did have, and Christ in all things.

Year for Priest - Bishop Thomas J. Olmstead: The Devil's Attacks on Priests

Bishop Olmstead

The influence of the devil can never overcome the power of God’s grace. Jesus assures us of this when He tells Peter (Mt 16:18), “I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” But the evil one, nonetheless, continues to tempt and test all of us during our life on earth.

Satanic attacks were commonplace in the life of Fr. John Vianney....

Patroness of Mothers

Prayer to St. Monica

Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine,
you perseveringly pursued your wayward son
not with wild threats
but with prayerful cries to heaven.
Intercede for all mothers in our day
so that they may learn to draw their children to God.
Teach them how to remain close to their children,
even the prodigal sons and daughters
who have sadly gone astray.

Modesty of Dress and Love of God

Blessed Mother
Here is another good article on the topic of modesty of dress:
Modesty of Dress and Love of God

Immorality in Fashions and Destruction of the Family
Garb that does not show a person’s self-respect as an intelligent and free being (and, through baptism, as a son or daughter of God and a temple of the Holy Ghost), contributes to a large extent to the present destruction of the family. It does this by favoring temptations against purity. It also does this by its vulgarity and childishness that corrodes the notion of the seriousness of life and the need for ascesis (self-discipline), all of which are fundamental elements that maintain family cohesion and stability.

The struggle for the restoration of the family by opposing abortion, contraception, and homosexuality will be much more effective if done together with efforts to restore sobriety, modesty and elegance in dress.

Prayer for Peace of Mind (Padre Pio)

St. Padre Pio

Kneeling at your feet, Sweet Mother of God and Queen of Peace, I, your loving child, confidently turn to you in my need, seeking your intercession for peace of mind and comfort in my troubled heart. (Hear mention your petitions)

O listen to me, dearest Heavenly Mother. Come to my aid and refuse me not as I cry to you. For you are my Mother, and you fail no one who has recourse to you, O Consoler of the afflicted, O Queen of Peace. Amen

The 13th Day - New Fatima Movie

The 13th Day
The 13th Day
Based on the memoirs of the oldest Seer, Lucia Santos, and many thousands of independent eye-witness accounts, The 13th Day dramatizes the TRUE story of three young shepherds who experienced six interactive apparitions with a “Lady from Heaven” between May and October 1917, which culminated into the final prophesized Miracle.
