We Remember
PRAYER TO JESUS AND MARY FOR ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED OF SEPTEMBER 11TH
Most loving Jesus,
I humbly beg You to offer to Your eternal Father,
in behalf of the holy souls in purgatory of those who died on September 11th, 2001,
the most Precious Blood which poured forth
from the sacred wounds of Your adorable Body,
together with Your agony and death.
O sorrowful Virgin Mary,
do you also present to the Father,
together with the dolorous Passion of your Son,
your own sighs and tears
and all the sorrows you suffered in His suffering,
in order that through the merits of the same,
the souls of those who died on September 11th now suffering in purgatory
may receive refreshment and peace.
Delivered from that painful state,
may they be clothed with glory in heaven
there to sing th glories of God for ever and ever.
Amen.
Modified prayer from New Saint Joseph People's Prayer Book
Mass was offered for the repose of the soul of Father Mychel Judge and all those who died on September 11th, this morning at Sts. Peter and Paul Church Honolulu.

God Bless America - Remembering September 11th
It has been ten years since our beloved United States of America was viciously attacked by cowardly terrorists. I remember it was early for us here in Hawaii...maybe 7am or so. I received a call from my mom who sounded very frantic. She kept mentioning the towers and what she said just didn't register in mind. Towers...falling down...attack... How could the Twin Towers have been taken down? They were the iconic buildings of NYC. When I finally comprehended what had happen, I was in shock. I then woke up my husband and son. They too couldn't believe the enormity of the tragedy.
Personally, my family was not really touched by what happened that day. It was later that we realized there could have been a tragedy in our family too. My brother-in- law worked in one of the towers. By Divine Providence, he was home that day with a torn ligament. I have mentioned before how many of his co-workers died on September 11th. Remember "Tom"? His friend and co-worker who many of you prayed for when he battled a valiant fight against cancer. He relayed the story of being there that day. People were crowding into an elevator in hopes of escaping with their lives. Tom was able to squeeze into an already crowded elevator. A heavy-set man, just could not fit in. They had to leave that man behind. The man died.
We as a nation have changed forever and many in bad ways. But today, we remember the victims and honor the heroes.
The scenes of the area surrounding the World Trade Center was one of chaos and looked much like a war zone the morning of the attack. Who can forget the look of anguish on the faces of the people there.
One of the first bodies to be recovered was that of Father Mychal Judge, a Franciscan priest and chaplain of the New York Fire Department. Most everyone would recognize the picture I am referring to. As you can see from the above photo, Father Judge was proud to be a part of NYFD. He gave his life for them.
The following are photos are of Ground Zero and the famous cross found at Ground Zero. They were taken in 2008 after a day trip to New York City.
For the past few years I have had the privilege of participating in Project 2,996 as an online way of honoring the September 11th victims.
This blog honored three men whose lives were cut remarkably short.
They are:
Robert Scandole who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald
Mark H. Rosen who worked at Sandler O'Neill and Partners
Samuel (Sandy) Ayala) who worked at Windows of the World
I am very sorry I never knew these men personally. If I had then my tributes would have been more worthy of them and their lives.
It was touching to see that a couple of the family members and a friend read the tributes. They not only read them, they took the time to leave comments.
Eternal rest grant them O Lord
and may Your Perpetual light
shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithfully departed
through the mercy of God
rest in peace.

Hi, Robert Scandole was my Uncle. I think you did a wonderful thing writing about him here. He will be missed by all who knew him but his memory will live on forever, thank you for writing such beautiful things about him.
Thank you so much for remembering my loving husband Mark Rosen. I just found this posting-minutes after learning of Osama Bin Laden's death. It is heartwarming for myself and my children to know he has not been forgotten.
Patti Rosen
Beautiful tribute. I knew Mark when he was a Jewish kid from Bayside, Queens, and even though I consider myself an equal opportunity worshipper today, I was born a Jewish girl from Flushing, so I appreciate you having honored that aspect of his being.

Remembering the Victims of 9/11 - Project 2996
This Sunday will mark the 10th anniversary of the worst unprovoked attack on America soil. So many innocent people lost their lives. So many families were left shattered by the sudden and tragic loss of a loved one.
Project 2,996 has tried to remember these victims on the anniversary of September 11th. Many individuals have stepped up, offering beautiful tributes to these victims. Yet, on the 10th anniversary of September 11th, there are many people who lost their lives on that fateful day, who will not have a tribute offered for them.
Won't you help?
It is very easy to do. First, visit Project 2996. Choose a name of someone currently not having a tribute and do a little research. Then if you are a blogger, you can write a small post about the person you selected.
On September 11th, I will repost the links of the two individuals I have written about.
Please help.

Project 2996 - We Remember - September 11th - Samuel (Sandy) Ayala
Through Project 2996 this blog once again pays tribute to a victim of 9/11.
This year we honor Samuel (Sandy) Ayala who died in the World Trade Center on that fateful and tragic day.
Sandy Ayala stayed close to his mother and three siblings. So close, in fact, that after he married, he insisted that he and his wife live with the family in the apartment where he was raised on East 113th Street, in East Harlem.
After he and his wife, Leyda Ayala, separated, he often took his daughter Samantha to the gym where he worked part-time as a personal trainer, and during the summer he would take her and her new half siblings to Coney Island and Orchard Beach.
On Sept. 11, he was working overtime as a banquet arranger at Windows on the World ‹ after his usual all-night shift ‹ to save money for a gift for Samantha's 12th birthday.
But that dedication was mixed with anxiety. "He was always afraid he would die young and never live to see his daughter grow up," Mrs. Ayala said. "He used to say he wouldn't live past 36." There was no real reason for it, since he had been weight- training all his life and was in superb physical condition, she added.
He died a month after his 36th birthday.

Project 2,996 - Tribute to Mark H. Rosen - Victim of 9/11

I am once again privileged and honored to participate in Project 2996 where participants pay tribute to a particular victim of the September 11th terrorist attack in our country.
This year I get to pay tribute to a family man, Mark H. Rosen of West Islip, NY. He died at the premature age of 45.
Mr. Rosen was a partner in the fixed income division of Sandler O'Neill & Partners. He was one of the many confirmed dead at or inside the World Trade Center.
I was able to find a little blurb about Mr. Rosen which I enjoyed reading. I would like to share it with you:
As a partner at Sandler O'Neil, Mark H. Rosen knew investment banking. As a father, he knew baton twirling.Source: Portraits 9/11/01: the collected "Portraits of grief" from The New York times
His daughter Amanda, now 13, got the twirling but early, becoming a member of the PAL Sparklers, a club in Brentwood, New York, near the family's home in West Islip. For a couple of years, no family vacation was complete without a least a few days spent in some out-of-the-way place at a competition.
"He was quite happy to sit in a hot gymnasium in places like Grand Rapids or Dubuque, and watch his daughter twirl." his wife Patti recalled.
Twirling also aided Mr. Rosen 45 in fulfilling another familial obligation, playing Santa Claus at annual school breakfasts. Mrs. Rosen is Catholic, and the children- Amanda, Mathew 12, and Bryan 16- were raised in the Church. Mr. Rosen was Jewish, but that did not matter. "We talked him into it." Mrs. Rosen said.
He borrowed the red suit from the Sparklers, who also recruited him to play Santa in some local twirling shows. He would be surrounded by jumping girls with batons, constantly whizzing past his nose, but he never flinched, having removed his glasses for that authentic Claus look. "He couldn't see a thing without them." Mrs. Rosen Said.

I cannot even begin to imagine losing my husband or our child losing his father. Mr. Rosen's family must surely still feel the devastating loss of their beloved husband and father.
I hope they are comforted by the thought that they will some day be all together for eternity.
With respect to Mr. Rosen's Jewish faith I offer the Kaddish for him:
Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen.Prayer Source
May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.
Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.
May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all Israel; and say, Amen.
He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.
Amen.

Terror attacks were an act of war, not simply a tragedy to be mourned
This morning I was chatting with my parents and my mom was telling me she watched the naming of all the victims' names. My dad interjected and said people were protesting the fact that this is drawn out and basically "enough is enough". My mom and I both verbally jumped on my poor dad who was simply relaying a news article. We couldn't fathom someone actually protesting the memorial for the victims of the 9/11th attack. But I also knew as hard as it was to believe, it was true.
Thanks to one of my sisters for sharing the following with me:

Thanks to one of my sisters for sharing the following with me:
A recent newspaper article suggested that the 9/11 commemoration "decibel level" should be "scaled back." Mourning the dead too loud and too long impinges on the living, the article said. Life goes on. I wouldn't disagree. But it is extremely important to distinguish between public mourning and public remembering; otherwise, the phrase that was as ubiquitous as the American flag six years ago, "Never Forget," and invoked with tearful or angry rectitude, is rendered hollow. We all meant it, whether the cause was revenge, retribution or simple recognition of our common humanity.

Our Lady of America and Ground Zero

Yesterday my friend Lois called me all excited about hearing that the Statue of Our Lady of America would be at Ground Zero. She asked if I had heard or read anything. At the time I hadn't. Late last night, I did find that the ever vigilant Leticia had posted about Our Lady of America on her blog. She had the privilege of speaking with Fr. Andrew Apostoli who is leading the cause for the canonization of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. He shared the following with Leticia:
Fr Apostoli he told me what was most on his mind, the apparitions of Our Lady of America, which were approved by several American bishops. In a recent apparition, Our Lady asked that her statue, pictured here, be installed in the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. She said that the graces which she would disperse from this action would "surpass those of Lourdes and Fatima".For more on Our Lady of America, please visit Letitia's blog. Mahalo Letitica!
Her statue will make the rounds tomorrow on 9/11 from Ground Zero to the Old St. Peter's Church in lower Manhattan.
Our Lady of America will visit the sanctuary where Fr. Mychal Judge's body was brought after his death while ministering to the victims of 9-11.It is hoped that Our Lady of America will grant consolation for devout and patriotic people who will be present at New York in the World Trade Center neighborhood this coming September 11th. Click here for background on Church of St Peter's involvement during 9-11.
The statue will be on display later that day at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

REMEMBERING ROBERT L. SCANDOLE
(Rob)
Died at the age of 36 on September 11th, 2001
"Adoring husband of Sheila (nee O'Grady). Greatest dad of Emma and Katie. Dear son of Robert and Peggy Scandole. Wonderful brother of Chris. Cherished grandson of Patrick Madden. Also survived and adored by uncles, aunts, nieces. nephew, cousins, in-laws and all the friends that loved him so. "
This tribute that I am posting will in no way come close to the tribute Robert's family or friends could offer. However, I ask that you accept it as it comes from the heart. Although I never knew him, I did want to honor him as best I could.
In searching guestbooks I found an entry that was very touching. It was posted by Teresa Jahn of Dixon, Illinois:
AMERICA CRIES
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you.

SAFELY HOME
I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.
And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.
There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth---
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Who was Robert Scandole?
Well, he was a man certainly loved by his dear family and friends. In the research I did, I sensed that right away.
He was a graduate of St. John's University. He received his CBA in 1987 and his MBA in 1990.
He was a vice-president at Cantor Fitzgerald at the time of his passing.
He was a regular guy, a proud American and one who did not deserve to die so early in life.

September 11th Memorial in Robert's hometown of Pelham Manor, New York
Michael Cawley, Suzanne Geraty and Robert Scandole were counselors at the Esopus Summer Camps when they were in high school and college. After graduation from college, they worked in the financial district and were killed in the 9/11 attack. Their remains were never found. This bench stands as a memorial to them. The families attended the dedication Mass which was held on this site in a peaceful grove on the Esopus property.
Eternal Life Grant to Robert O Lord and may Your perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
Amen.

America the Beautiful
America the Beautiful
Two years ago, angry men with bland faces and hateful eyes boarded planes with the intent to make a misguided statement. Their goal was to show the democratic capitalistic United States and inevitably the world that our self serving, greedy policies should be changed. Our support of Israel, our decadent ways, our avarice for money, our childish hunger for celebrities and their day to day activity or whatever the reason caused these young men to hate America so much. Their hate culminated with a well planned attack designed to make the world take notice that US ideologies will no longer be tolerated. They did this by burning alive and crushing men and women whose only crime that day was going to work. But something good, I mean very good came out of out the situation.
Like a flower sprouting out of a crack in the sidewalk on a deserted street, hope was reborn.
For weeks our petty bickering ended. No longer were we White, Hispanic, Asian, Black, Arab, Jew, Gentile, upper class, lower class, white collar, blue collar - no, we were American and damn proud of it. We placed American flags on our doors, our cars and our lapels. We were a patriotic country again. People started smiling to strangers. I heard "thank you" much more and I saw overt acts of courtesy by my fellow citizens; this in a major metropolitan area where rush-rush is the rule of the day. I remember basking in this patriotic glow. In the midst of it, I hoped it would never end. I enjoyed the smiles and I enjoyed watching people literally stopping to smell the roses. People were capturing the moment of the day. I had hoped this feeling would last forever. Alas, it didn't.
Can't we bring back that patriotic feeling without having our hard working men and women perish by fire? We live in the greatest country ever. Opportunities abound for anyone who works at it. If you have a dream, America can provide you with the resources to fulfill it. If you want an education, it's attainable. If you want to start a business, the opportunity is waiting for you. Anything is possible in America.
We have wonderful citizens. We have fire fighters, policemen and women, store clerks, farmers, truck drivers, teachers; we have a wonderful mosaic. Let's make our differences the cement that brings us all together. It can be as easy as smiling to a stranger. We have to remain patriotic, that's how our country grew in the first place. If we do, our country will continue to grow and prosper. We're only 227 years old and look how far we've come. In the process, we'll all become happier, friendlier citizens of the greatest country in the world.
America IS beautiful.

Subject of new movie on 9/11 says Catholic faith saved him from death
Mahalo to my friend Alexandrina.
Washington DC, Aug. 10, 2006 (CNA) - Will Jimeno, whose story of survival in the 9/11 attacks is retold in the new Oliver Stone movie “World Trade Center,” said this week his Catholic faith and an unexpected vision kept him alive during the long hours in which he was trapped under the rubble of the twin towers.Read the rest here.
“What kept me going was the faith in God that my mother instilled in me as a Catholic. And, as the last Pope (John Paul II) said, we Hispanics have very great faith,” Jimeno told the EFE news agency in one of dozens of interviews he has granted.
“World Trade Center” recounts the story of Jimeno and John McLoughlin, two New York police officers who ran into the second tower to help rescue people. When the tower collapsed, all of their fellow officers were crushed to death. Jimeno and McLoughlin managed to survive 12 hours under the rubble, unable to see one another but at least able to communicate. Only 20 people were pulled from the rubble, alive - Jimeno was number 18 and McLoughlin number 19.
“When we got to the twin towers and I saw people jumping out, I felt like my hands were tied, and that’s the worse thing that can happen to a police officer. We really wanted to help as many people as possible,” Jimeno said...
