May Father Felix Vandebroek Rest in Peace

A beloved catholic priest who's spent more than 50 years in Hawaii has died.

Father Felix Vandebroek was found dead this morning at the Sacred Hearts Center in Kaneohe, after returning to Hawaii from a trip to Belgium where he's originally from.

Vandebroek moved to Hawaii in 1956, and has served in parishes on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and the Big Island.

Most recently, he was the pastor at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Kalaupapa on Molokai.

He served that role for the past three years, working with people with hansen’s disease, just as fellow Belgian Saint Damien had done before.

Father Vandebroek was 83-years-old.

First Year Anniversary of Father Edwin Joseph Duffy's Death

Today is one year since God called my good friend Father Duffy, home. He was called home on St. Joseph's Feast Day. How fitting! Because of my father's passing, I was not able to attend his funeral. I heard there were many priests in attendance that day. I know the homeschoolers were there. He had been our devoted spiritual director for many years.

I cannot pass by his street or think of his beloved St. Pius X Church without thinking of him. He was a wonderful and holy priest with a devilish sense of humor and a twinkle in his blue eyes. He was one of a kind.

If God willing, he is in Heaven right now, I just know is telling his old jokes.

I found his obituary that appeared in the Hawaii Catholic Herald. It was the first time I had read it. Patrick Downes, the editor, did a great job. I hope you take the time to read about this beloved priest.

It was deep sadness that I learned today that family friend Fr. Raymond Beach passed away. He had been one of my sister's really good friend and spiritual director for over 20 years.

I am glad I had a chance to visit with him when I was in New Jersey a few months ago. My sister and I had a nice chat with Father as he recuperated from an accidental fall.

A bittersweet thought I had when learning of Fr. Raymond's passing is that it was too bad that my brother in law was not able to have the family of boxer Jim Braddock (Cinderella Man)contact Fr. Raymond. He really would have liked that. Fr. Raymond had been the altar server at Jim Braddock's wedding. In my brother in law's defense, it was not for lack of trying. But I am sure Fr. Raymond and Jim Braddock will meet up in Heaven. He was a good and faithful priest.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord,
