Satan Exists, and Christ Defeated Him

Demons, Satanism and other related phenomena are quite topical today, and they disturb a great part of our society.

Our technological and industrialized world is filled with magicians, wizards, occultism, spiritualism, fortune tellers, spell trafficking, amulets, as well as very real Satanic sects. Chased away from the door, the devil has come in through the window. Chased away by the faith, he has returned by way of superstition.

The episode of Jesus' temptations in the desert that is read on the First Sunday of Lent helps us to have some clarity on this subject. First of all, do demons exist? That is, does the word "demon" truly indicate some personal being with intelligence and will, or is it simply a symbol, a manner of speaking that refers to the sum of the world's moral evil, the collective unconscious, collective alienation, etc.?

Many intellectuals do not believe in demons in the first sense. But it must be noted that many great writers, such as Goethe and Dostoyevsky, took Satan's existence very seriously. Baudelaire, who was certainly no angel, said that "the demon's greatest trick is to make people believe that he does not exist."

Spiritual Warfare - The Occult Has Demonic Influence

St. Michael
If you recall, yesterday I posted that sacramentals are part of the Church's arsenal. Well, arsenal against what you may ask? It is against the devil, demons and all kinds of evil ready to attack humans and have them lose their souls forever.

The following article is on Catholic Culture and was written by Bishop Donald Montrose, D.D.
By the "occult," we are speaking of some supra-human or supernatural influence that is not from God. We commonly associate the occult with that which has demonic influence.

In the United States today the occult has become much more popular than it was twenty years ago. Today, there is popular Satanic music, Satanic street gangs, an increase in Satanic worship, a more widespread use of the horoscope and study of the signs of the zodiac, and Satanic games that can be purchased. In spite of this, many people do not take the occult seriously. They laugh off the notion of the Power of Evil as actually being a part of the "real" world in which we live.
I hope you take the time to read the article in its entirety. It is extremely informative and something that I recommend everyone should read, regardless of their religion.
...The Evil One can tempt us, but he cannot touch us directly unless we open the door for him. We should not fear Satan nor should we be constantly looking for him in the ordinary happenings of our life...
In his article Bishop Montrose covers many aspects of the occult and its many kinds of practices. I would like to share with you the following on Santeria. Those of you who are Hispanic may be familiar with this blend of Catholicism and voodoo-like healing popular in some Caribbean islands.
CURING SICKNESS THROUGH SUPERSTITION ("CURANDEROS" AND "SANTEROS")

It doesn't matter if there are statues, holy water, crucifixes, prayers to Jesus, Mary and the saints, if there is any superstitious practice it is evil. These are some examples:

--using charms or a tomato to wash one's body, putting the remainder under the bed,

--cleaning one's body with eggs or lemons and burning the materials with charcoal,

--using rose water and alcohol for healing. (In one case this was prepared by placing a skeleton in the water for six hours, followed by singing and praying over the water.)

Sometimes a "curandero" gives a special vitamin to take or even prescribes "Catholic" prayers to be said. None of these "prayers" should be said in these circumstances because they were prepared under the influence of evil.

Other examples include:

--taking a special bath prepared with wine, flowers, bread, cinnamon, black sugar, and water from a river.

--wrapping a person in a special bandage, cutting off piece by piece, and burying it in a recent grave in the cemetery.

These are just a few of the superstitions used, but there are many more.

Sometimes people pray to God and to the saints and then go off seeking relief through the kingdom of darkness. Many times God does not heal through prayer or doctors because He wants the soul to be healed first of hatred, jealousy, or some other sin. God knows what He is doing. We have to choose either the power of God or the power of evil. If you have any objects used in these false cures, destroy them. Renounce Satan, renounce this sin, ask God's forgiveness and confess your sin to a priest.
My husband and I know from personal experience how getting involved with New Age healers can lead to an unsettling of one's spirit and sometimes even death. Someone we knew and who was in a lot of physical and chronic pain, got involved with a Reiki Master healer. He ultimately killed himself thereby devastating his family.

If only people would realize how dangerous it is to get involved in even perceived harmless little things like reading the daily horoscopes, or any little superstitions. The devil just needs a little crack in the door to one's soul and he will gleefully accept that tiny invitation.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

- Pope Leo XIII

Croatian Priest: Devil Rules Media and Politics

... The devil today no longer hides his intentions, but he shows himself and rules the media, politics and public life, imposing his norms: materialism, promiscuity and pornography, against God’s 10 commandments. However, the good will always prevail over the evil, although today it is threatened by new state laws (referring to the new Croatian law on fighting discrimination). They can make up whatever they want, but victory is always on the side of good – said Father Linic. He then told the believers that it is time for them to pass over to the right side, as to stop the evil from ruling the world and from threatening the believers’ families...

Spiritual Help From Jesus - The Wiles of the Devil

The Temptation of Christ
The Temptation of Christ
"...The Devil, that old enemy of yours, tries by every means he can to obstruct your desire to do good, and to lure you away from:

- any kind of devout exercise; honouring the Saints, for example,

- devout meditation upon my sufferings,

- profitable recalling of your sins,

- keeping watch over your heart,

- and your firm resolve to advance in holiness.

Many are the evil thoughts he slips into your mind, to fill you with weariness and disgust, hoping so to entice you from prayer and reading good books.

A humble confession is abhorrent to him, and he would make you give upon Communion if he could. Do not believe him; pay no attention to him, however, often he spreads out his crafty nets to catch you.

When he suggests evil and filthy thoughts, tell him they are his , not yours.

Speak to him like this:

- 'You filthy spirit, be off with you!

- Blush, you wretch! How utterly filthy you are putting stuff like that in my ears!

- Away from me, you traitor, you monster of evil, you shall have no hold upon me.

Jesus will be beside me, like a valiant warrior, and you will stand there confounded. I would rather die, rather undergo any kind of torment, than give in to you. So keep quiet and hold your tongue; I'm not going to listen to you any more, however often you try annoying me...' "
- From the Imitation of Christ by Thomas A Kempis. Chapter 6: On the Testing of a True Lover.

The Devil's Beatitudes

or should we refer to them as his baditudes.
Mahalo to Marcella for sharing these.

If the Devil were to write his Beatitudes, they would probably go something like this:

Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour once a week with their fellow Christians in Church -- they are my best workers.

Blessed are those Christians who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked -- I can use them.

Blessed are the touchy, with a bit of luck they may stop going to church -- they are my missionaries.

Blessed are those who are very religious but get on everyone's nerves -- they are mine forever.

Blessed are the troublemakers -- they shall be called my children.

Blessed are those who have no time to pray -- they are easy prey for me.

Blessed are the gossiper -- for they are my secret agents.

Blessed are those critical of church leadership -- for they shall inherit a place with me in my fate.
Blessed are the complainers -- I'm all ears for them.

Blessed are you when you read this and think it is about other people and not yourself -- I've got you.
