Croatian Priest: Devil Rules Media and Politics

... The devil today no longer hides his intentions, but he shows himself and rules the media, politics and public life, imposing his norms: materialism, promiscuity and pornography, against God’s 10 commandments. However, the good will always prevail over the evil, although today it is threatened by new state laws (referring to the new Croatian law on fighting discrimination). They can make up whatever they want, but victory is always on the side of good – said Father Linic. He then told the believers that it is time for them to pass over to the right side, as to stop the evil from ruling the world and from threatening the believers’ families...

EWTN
EWTN hit the airwaves on August 15, 1981 and after soon-to-be 27 years, it will finally happen...EWTN, the Eternal Word Television Network, has finally arrived on Oahu and Kauai. I got word the other day from an executive at our local cable company Oceanic Cable, that they plan on launching EWTN on February 1st, on digital channel 408. I just checked and we have it!

To all of you who joined in our prayer for this to happen, mahalo nui loa!

Thank you dear Lord for making this possible!

The Dangers to Our Souls

addiction

Soutenous of A Catholic Notebook has a very thought provoking post about the Touchable Past and Future. She starts off with a quote from E.B. White:
"I believe television is going to be the test of the modern world, and that in this new opportunity to see beyond the range of our vision we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky. We shall stand or fall by television -- of that I am quite sure."
Guess when it was written? Well, visit her blog to find out.

Interestingly, I received the Winter Edition 2007 Dedicated Decades from the The Universal Living Rosary Association on Saturday. All the articles are usually very good but this issue was even more so. I was especially intrigued by the article "A Moral Society to a Godless Society: How Did it Happen?"

I will briefly highlight some of the points of that article here:

In a time span of 50 years, our society has gone from a God-fearing, moral generation, based on family traditions, values and roots to a society where everything is questioned, changed and/or compromised.
"Fifty years ago, abortion, murder, corruption, pornography and the multitude of evils which plague our society today would never have been tolerated. Society would have revolted."
According to the author of this article, all of this was well calculated with the introduction of television into our homes. We were lulled with wholesome and entertaining shows such as I Love Lucy, Lawrence Welk and soon we were glued in front of our sets. We forsook the time spend together in our backyards, with family, with friends and neighbors and instead became busier and busier.
"Man became more reliant on himself and less reliant on God. When we quit praying, we became less holy. Because of our lack of virtue, we became more prone to sin. This lack of holiness was a breeding ground for the great sins of our society."
What can we do? Well, the author challenges us to turn off our TV sets.

According to the Church Fathers:
"The eyes are the windows of the soul." If protected, innocence dwells; if exposed to the world, filth dwells..."
It is sad but true that television is often used by some parents as a baby sitter for their children. This supposedly inexpensive method of babysitting then frees the parents from the constant demands of their children. But at what cost????
"The entire sexual revolution has been launched by television and brought into the sacred confines of our home, imprinted on our minds and is a constant torment to the natural piety and modesty of our souls. The American Hersey is planted firmly in both the young and the old. "I am #1, I will do it my way, I gotta be me!". It is an entire philosophy of self-glorification, instant and complete, which has snuffed out the noble deeds of sacrificing oneself for the sake of one's brethren."
What the saints thought about television or entertainment that would one day lead to television:

Padre Pio was both disturbed and disgusted by television. He knew that eventually television would destroy the family. So he often warned people not to allow the Devil into their homes.

Saint Cyprian said "Theaters are a school of impurity and a place where modesty is prostituted."

Saint John Chrysostom said: "All should fly from theaters as from a plague."

In fact, Jesus told us that "Whoever allows adultery into his heart, commits the sin".

Just think about the shows on television. There is no need to think that hard to come up with shows on television right now that glorify adultery, infidelity and other sinful behavior. We are exposing ourselves and our families to the near occasions of sin by watching these shows.

Pope Pius XII made a prophetic statement about television when he stated:
"Children can often avoid the transient attack of a disease outside their home, but cannot escape the disease when it resides in the home itself. It is wrong to introduce any occasion of sin, whatever, into the sanctity of the home."
Well, I think that is enough for today. Tomorrow I will post more about clearing our homes from other destructive publications, etc. I leave you with the following:
MY LORD, TV

The TV is my shepherd, I shall not want.
It makes me to lie on the sofa.
It leads me away from the Faith. It destroys my soul.
It leads me to the path of sex and violence for the advertiser's sake.
Yea, though I walk in the shadow of Christian responsibilities,
There will be no interruption, for the TV is with me.
It's cable and remote control, they comfort me.
It prepares a commercial for me in the midst of my worldliness,
It anoints my head with humanism and consumerism;
My covetousness runneth over.
Surely ignorance and laziness shall follow me all the days of my life.
And I shall dwell in the house of wretchedness watching TV forever.

Update on EWTN and Oceanic Cable

Yesterday I posted this reply from Oceanic Cable as to why they cannot bring us EWTN. Today, the west coast rep from EWTN called me and we had a pretty interesting conversation.

It appears that EWTN has been trying for many years to work with Oceanic Cable in bringing their channel to Oahu. Interesting, the Big Island, Maui and Kauai do carry EWTN through the cable company. Now in all fairness, I am not sure if OC is also the cable company on the neighbor islands.

Mr. P (the EWTN rep) also informed me that since EWTN is free, there should be no problem. But that isn't the case here is it? And, that EWTN has spend a lot of money trying to bring EWTN here. Keeping in mind that they rely solely on the support of viewers. Mr. P in fact, has made many trips to all the islands in an attempt to bring EWTN to Hawaii.

So what is the problem? Apparently, Oceanic Cable is not being truthful or forthcoming with the real reasons why after many years, they still will not add EWTN.

As it stands right now, we will have to wait until December 1st when the person in charge of marketing returns Mr. P's telephone call regarding the above.

To all the readers of Hawaii, all I can say is keep calling and emailing OC. Don't give up.

I wonder how much slower DSL is?

EWTN and Hawaii's Cable Company

Yesterday, our local paper reported that Oceanic Cable, a Time Warner company, would be carrying Logos, a new Gay and Lesbian channel. Since for the 14 years I have been living here, continuously asking them to carry EWTN, I was a little perturbed by this news. I sent Oceanic Cable an email and received the following response today: (The emphasis added is mine)
Aloha!

Thank you for your recent inquiry. We have attempted to carry the EWTN
channel and have honestly tried to negotiate a deal with them. But EWTN
is unwilling to pay for the necessary equipment to process their signal
and transmit it to us. Nor did they want to air on the airtime we have
available.

I too am stymied as to why a Catholic channel would be unwilling to make
this investment to reach their congregation, especially considering the
Catholic Church is the wealthiest and largest church in the world.

The new channels that we do add, including the gay and lesbian Logo
network and other protestant religious channels have all made the
necessary investment in equipment necessary to create and broadcast
their channels to us. As to why EWTN refuses to do the things every
other channel has to do is beyond me. Only EWTN can answer these
questions.

Thank You for being an Oceanic Time Warner Cable Customer!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail us again
or contact our Customer Care Department at 643-2100. When replying to
this e-mail, please include this message as well as all previous
correspondence regarding this issue.

Thank you,

Comment: We are long time customers of both the cable and internet. For
many years we have been requesting the EWTN Channel Eternal Word
Television Network. For many years, Oceanic Cable has given us
different excuses why they cannot carry it. Today I find out that OC
will be carrying a new Gay and Lesbian Channel and frankly I am very
unhappy. The reason is not because I do not believe Gays shouldn't have
their own channel but because every other type of channel, including
Protestant channels, take preference over a leading and very popular
Catholic Channel.
Although, it would hurt my family somewhat, I am really considering
unsubscribing to both the cable and internet through OC.
I would appreciate a response.
Thank you,
Esther Gefroh
I did response briefly to their little comment about the Church being the wealthiest church...and that they probably wanted to relegate EWTN to some obscure time. More importantly, I emailed a copy to EWTN asking them to respond directly to Oceanic Cable.

Our Children - Living Sacrifices

Shared by Sue
A famous commercial asks, "Do you know where your children are tonight?" "Sure," you may say, "they're right in the other room watching television." With that assurance, you settle down to a good night's sleep. But, should it be left at that? Are Christian parents falling into Satan's trap of the false assurance that as long as their kids are at home they're okay, when this may sometimes be far from the truth?

The Word says, "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire..." (Deuteronomy 18:10). One could extrapolate from that: don't sacrifice your children to demons ... wherever they are. You wouldn't leave your kids in your living room drinking a quart of vodka, but what are they drinking into their souls through your TV...with what spirits are they "communing"?

What is behind all the brutal violence, sexuality and greed so prevalent in the most popular programming? The Apostle Paul warned: "...the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and the table of demons..." (1 Corinthians 10:20-21).

Of course, there are worthwhile Christ-centered programs on television and also on DVD. But, if viewing isn't monitored and selective, what are your children watching? Someday your children's lives will bear the fruit of what they are absorbing now. Consider whose cup they are drinking from daily. Re-evaluate tonight your responsibilities as parents when it comes to your children's television habits, so you can all have sweet dreams.

Let's Pray Together…

Heavenly Father, thank you for the children you have entrusted to me. Keep me from allowing them to be sacrificed to demon spirits through television or other worldly sources. Grant me wisdom and courage to monitor their viewing so they might grow up strong, committed and bringing glory to You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
