Book of Revelations Glossary of Symbols

My friend Di shared the follow with her e-group:
To read the Word of God in this apocalyptic book without letting our imagination give us misguided interpretations, we need to understand the symbolism the same way the first readers did. These symbols were easily recognized by the first readers, because the meanings had been familiar to the people throughout Jewish history, as can be seen frequently in the Old Testament.

666 = tripled (the most) imperfection; anyone who viciously persecutes Christians
SEVEN = fullness, complete amount
SEVEN CHURCHES = all the churches of all the world of all times...

I just wanted to let you know, that some of the symbols seem to have incorrect definitions.

The Lion is a symbol of royalty - NOT the noblest of God's creations (which would be angels; or humankind if you limit it to mortal creations).

My Bible commentaries say the morning star is Jesus himself (RSV, 1957), or the glory in which the saints will shine in eternity (Douay-Rheims, 1950)

I took a quick look at the parent site, but couldn't find a Nihil Obstat, or Imprimatur listed. I just wanted to let people know this is one person's interpretation - NOT the infallible teaching of the Church.

I would also point out that the seven churches of the Book of Revelation ARE still standing (most of them) in modern day Turkey.

God Bless,
