Our Lady of Akita's Third Message on October 13, 1973

Our Lady of Fatima at the 8th annual Rosary in the Park, Honolulu

The message of Our Lady of Akita to Sister Agnes Sasagawa is very similar to the Fatima message.

The following is particularly timely as our bishops are gathered together at the Synod to discuss marriage and the family as well as the ongoing worldwide persecution of Christians and threats to religious freedom in the United States.
"As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity.  It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before.  Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful.  The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead.  The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son.  Each day, recite the prayers of the Rosary.  With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests.
The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, and bishops against bishops.  The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres.  The Church and altars will be vandalized.  The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demons will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.  The demon will rage especially against souls consecrated to God.  The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness.  If sins increase in number and gravity there will no longer be pardon for them."

Feast of the Holy Rosary

"St. Dominic Receiving the Rosary from the Virgin Mary" - Artist unknown

Today the Church honors the Blessed Mother of God under the title of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.

In honor of this day and of the momentous victory of Lepanto, let us offer our prayer of the Holy Rosary for our Christian brothers and sisters being persecuted by Islamic terrorists, especially in Iraq and Syria.

The following is a little history of the rosary written by Msgr. Charles Dollen.  It is taken from his book Listen, Mother of God!: Reflections on the Litany of Loreto.

The Rosary devotion...was introduced by Blessed Alan de la Roche, a Domincan who lived...in the fifteenth century.  He piously referred it to his founder, St. Dominic, and while it is true to the spirit of Dominic and has roots in other, older Marian forms, Blessed Alan deserves the credit.

...it soon earned the name 'The Psalter of the Poor,' or 'The Poor Man's Breviary.'  The monks and nuns gathered together in their chapels to chant or recite the Divine Office, which, at heart, has the 150 Psalms to center its liturgical piety...

The 150 Aves of the Rosary imitated the 150 Psalms, and the divisions by tens into decades make counting them on the fingers quite easy and effortless.

But the great power of the Rosary comes from the fifteen meditations or mysteries [Note: this was written prior to Saint John Paul the Great adding the Luminous mysteries]...

The clients of Our Lady of the Rosary find great joy and comfort in its history.  Among the great events associated with this devotion is the great naval victory of the Christians over the Moslems at Lepanto on October 7, 1571.  Pope St. Pius V urged Christians to fast and pray to save Christendom from the hands of the infidels.  Their record of pillaging and enslaving Christians was notorious.  The prayer that this saintly pontiff, who was a Dominican, decreed was the Rosary.

After the victory was announced, he proclaimed that day the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and he said, 'By the Rosary the darkness of heresy has been dispelled and the light of the Catholic Faith shines out in all its brilliancy..."

At Fatima, the Blessed Mother again approved the Rosary, as she has at most private revelations in recent centuries....

Pope Leo XIII was the great modern devotee of the Rosary and it was he who designated October as the Month of the Rosary.  He published many works on the Rosary and never ceased to urge it on others.

"To appease the might of an outraged God, " he states in Octobri Mense, 'and to bring the health of sul so needed by those who are sorely afflicted, there is nothing better than devout prayer and persevering prayers, provided that it be joined with a love and practice of Christian life.  And both of these, the spirit of prayer and the practice of Christian life, are best attained through the devotion of the Rosary of Mary..."

Among the various supplications with which we successfully appeal to the Virgin Mother of God, the Holy Rosary without doubt occupies a special and distinct place.  - Pope Pius XI

"This prayer is well-suited to the People of God, most pleasing to the Mother of God and most effective in gaining heaven's blessings." - Pope Paul VI

"Before we being reciting the Hours, or the Rosary, we should consider whom we are going to address, and who we are that are addressing Him, so that we may do so in the way we should.  I assure you that if you give all due attention to a consideration of these two points before beginning vocal prayers which you are about to say, you would be engaging in mental prayer for a very long time." - St. Teresa of Avila

"The Rosary is strength, it is power, it is a chain of gold which links us to Mary."  John Cardinal Carberry

Padre Pio and His Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel - "The companion of my infancy." - Saint Padre Pio

We are all in the presence of a celestial companion who
"does not abandon us, even when we disgust God." - Padre Pio

Padre Pio, according to Father Alessio Parente, OFM Cap, in his book Send Me Your Guardian Angel", had a extremely close relationship to his guardian angel.  He also had ecstasies and during these ecstasies, Padre Pio's guardian angel would speak to him, laugh with him and Padre Pio in return would tease him.

The following is the transcript of one such ecstasy which occurred on November 29, 1911:

"...Angel of God, my Angel...are you not taking care of me?...Are you a creature of God?...Either you're a creature of God or a creator... You're a creator?  No. Therefore you are God's creature and you have laws which you must obey... You must stay beside me whether you want to or not...He laughs..what is there to laugh about?  Tell me one thing... you must tell me..who was here yesterday morning? ...and he laughs...you must tell me...who was it?...Either Father Agostino or the Superior... tell me then... was it perhaps their secretaries?  Answer me now...If you don't answer me I will say it was one of those four...He laughs,...and Angel laughs!...Tell me then...I won't leave you until you tell me..

"If not, I will ask Jesus...and then you'll catch it!... Anyway, I won't ask that little Mother, that Lady...who looks at me so grimly...She's thee in a bad humour...Jesus isn't it true that your Mother is in a bad humour?...She laughs!...

"Now then, little man (his Guardian Angel), tell me who it was... No answer...he's there...like a fixture...I want to know one thing I asked you and I'm here a long time...Jesus, you tell me.. (It is assumed that there his Angel answers)...

What an intimate relationship Padre Pio had not only with his own angel but also with Jesus and Mary!

In the last part of the transcript is the following: "Jesus, will the evil one come tonight?...Well, help those two who assist me, protect and defend them... I know, you are there...but... Angel of mine, stay with me! Jesus, one last thing...let me kiss you...Fine!... how sweet are these wounds!... they bleed... but this blood is sweet... is sweet... Jesus, sweetness... Holy Host...Love, Love that sustains me...Love... until we met again! (a rivederci).."

Prayer to the Guardian Angel

O Holy Angel, whom God, by the effect of
His goodness and tender regard for my welfare,
has charged with the care of my conduct, who supports me when I am discouraged and continually
obtains for me new favors, I return thee profound thanks and conjure thee,
most amiable protector, to continue thy charitable care
and defense of me against the malignant attacks of all my enemies.
Keep me at a distance from all occasions of sin.
Obtain for me the grace of hearkening attentively
tot he holy inspirations and of faithfully
reducing them to practice.
Protect me in all the temptations and trials of this life,
but more especially at the hour of my death, and
do not leve me until you have conducted me into the presence of my Creator,
in the mansions of everlasting happiness.
Amen.

Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael

Saint Michael the Archangel

Pope Leo XIII's Prayer to Saint Michael

O glorious Prince of the heavenly host,
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in the battle and in the fearful warfare that we are waging
against the principalities and powers,
against the rulers of this world of darkness,
against the evil spirits.

Come you to the assistance of men,
whom Almighty God created immortal,
making them in His own image
and likeness and redeeming them at a great price
from the tyranny of Satan.
Fight this day the battle of the Lord
with the legions of holy angels, even as of old
you did fight against Lucifer,
the leader of the proud spirits and all his rebel angels,
who were powerless to stand against you,
neither was their place found any more in heaven.
And that apostate angel, transformed into an
angel of darkness who still creeps
about the earth to encompass our ruin,
was cast headlong into the abyss together with his followers.

But behold,
that first enemy of mankind, and a
murderer from the beginning,
has regained his confidence.
Changing himself into an angel of light,
he goes about with the whole multitude of the
wicked spirits to invade the earth and blot out
the Name of God
and of His Christ,
to plunder, to slay, and to consign to eternal damnation
the souls that have been destined for a crown of everlasting life.
This wicked serpent, like an
unclean torrent, pours into men of depraved minds
and corrupt hearts the poison of his malice,
the spirit of lying, impiety, and blasphemy,
and the deadly breath of impurity and every form of vice and iniquity.
These crafty enemies of mankind have filled to overflowing
with gall and wormwood the Church,
which is the Bride of the Lamb without spot;
they have laid profane hands upon her most sacred treasures.

Make haste, therefore,
O invincible Prince,
to help the people of God against the inroads of the lost spirits and
grant us the victory.
Amen.

Pope Leo XIII

War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.  The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.  The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it...

Revelation 12:7-12

Both the above are from Magnificat.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel
Prayer to Saint Gabriel

Saint Gabriel the Archangel,
I venerate you as the Angel of the Incarnation,
because God specially appointed you to bear the messages concerning the God-Man to Daniel,
Zechariah, and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Give me a very tender and devoted love for the Incarnate Word and his Blessed Mother more like your own.
I venerate you also as the "Strength from God" because you are the giver of God's strength,
consoler and comforter chosen to strengthen God's faithful and
teach them important truths.
I ask for the grace of a special power of the will to strive for holiness of life.
Steady my resolutions; renew my courage; comfort and console me in the problems, trials and sufferings of daily living,
as you consoled our Savior in his agony and Mary in her sorrows and Joseph in his trials.
I put my confidence in you.
Saint Gabriel I ask you especially for this favor: (mention your request)
Through your earnest love for the Son of God made man and for his Blessed Mother I beg of you, intercede for me that my request may be granted, if it be God's holy will.
Pray for us, Saint Gabriel the Archangel, that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.

A BRIEF RETROSPECT ON EASTERN CHRISTIANITY

by Brother John M. Samaha, S.M.

When the Roman Empire first regarded the early church as a branch of Judaism, Christianity was legally protected.  Eventually the profession of Christianity became a crime, and the degree of persecution or tolerance wavered according to the whims of the reigning emperor and the local ruler.  Increased martyrdom brought on the development of apologetics and theological precision in addressing controversy and fostered order in the life of the church. Sometimes Christians felt protected from state persecution, but periods of fierce official persecution were common.

When Diocletian in 303 stepped up the Roman persecution of Christians, he perceived the church as a political threat, a state within a state, developing an establishment paralleling his government.  He ordered churches destroyed, clergy imprisoned, sacred books confiscated, and rampant martyrdom of believers.  Only in April 311 was an Edict of Toleration of Christians issued, and in 313 the Emperor Constantine promulgated the Edict of Milan, which granted freedom of conscience.  When Constantine transferred his capital from Rome to Byzantium the spread of Christianity coincided with the spread of the Roman Empire.

Desiring Christianity to be as united as the law and citizenship of the empire, Constantine convoked church councils to settle theological questions and disputes under imperial supervision.  In May 325 the first general council met in Nicaea.  The bishops attended at government expense.  Constantine himself participated and took positions, advocating a universal creed.  Following that first council the debates continued in matters of Christology, and imperial interference played a part.  Any departure from official Christian orthodoxy was regarded as a state crime.

Subsequent councils were called by imperial rulers with the expectation that a united religion would mean a united empire.  But this backfired, and the opposite occurred.  Schisms proliferated.  By the close of the sixth century there was confusion and serious disaffection from orthodox Christianity, and consequently from the Constantinople government.  In those parts of the empire where the churches did not accept the Council of Chalcedon (451), Christians were heavily taxed for disagreeing with the doctrines supported by the emperor.  Some parts of the empire suffered abuse and persecution from Byzantine Christians.  The invasion of the Persians into parts of Byzantium only aggravated the situation.

With the seventh-century Muslim invasion, some Christians welcomed the Muslim Arabs, because often the Islamic protection was better than that of Constantinople or the Persians.  With this new regime Christians were given a special but secondary status in society (dhimmi) which offered government protection.  But there was a price to pay, a special tax (jizya), in addition to laws imposing constraints on dress and manners, and forbidding the riding of animals.  The use of religious symbols in public was forbidden, and there were prohibitions against building or repairing churches, ringing bells, and the public display of crosses.  Non-Muslims were not allowed missionary activity, and Muslims were forbidden to convert to Christianity.

This two-tiered system made the Christians second- class citizens but allowed them to live peacefully side by side with the Muslims and others.  But this millet system reinforced the divisions among churches and splintered Christianity.  Some Christians succumbed to Islam rather than remain in a subordinate social standing.  Yet Christianity thrived in many places, and Christians remained the majority in that region into the ninth century.

In these times Eastern and Western Christianity became increasingly estranged religiously and politically.  Western Latin Christianity was more strongly adversarial toward Islam.  This resulted in the Crusades of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries.  The Crusades began as a desire to free the Holy Land from the Muslims, but ended with the sack of Constantinople and the Eastern churches.  Western Christianity oppressed the Christian East.  Christian nations oppressed the Muslims.  Because Islam did not recognize the separation of religion and government, the Muslims failed to see the difference between local Christians of the East and the hostile Western Christian governments that mounted the Crusades.

Several Muslim dynasties ruled following the Crusades.  The last was the Ottoman Empire, which established its capital in Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453.  The Ottomans reinforced the subordinate status of Christians and Jews through the millet system.  The Ottoman caliph considered “Armenian” those Christians who rejected the Council of Chalcedon.  This led to frictions and internal quarrels in the differing millets.  In the latter times of the Ottoman Empire European nations opened commercial contacts in the Near East and Middle East.  The European powers requested the right to protect their trading clients, often Christians.  Different governments protected different churches, and this aligned Eastern churches with European political centers.  Gradually this disrupted the millet system as European governments wanted equality of citizenship for Eastern Christians.

With Islam, religion and government are joined in the service of God, and the same person usually provides both religious and civic leadership.  The Islamic ideal is a worldwide Muslim community (‘ummah) in which politics and religion are one, and racial and ethnic distinctions are not important.  The Qur’an and other Islamic religious books are the foundation for the legal system, and there is no institution parallel to the Church.  Christian religious leaders always had difficulty convincing their Muslim rulers of their civic loyalty because they also wanted to be in contact with the foreign religious hierarchy.  The protection by European governments increased the doubts about the civic loyalty of Eastern Christians.

With the demise of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, European nations assumed mandates in some parts of the former empire to form nation-states in which citizenship would be based on one’s place or residence or birth rather than on religion, and in which religious organizations would be free from government control.  This was in opposition to the ideal of ‘ummah, the united community under single governance with economic, social, and legal practices based on religion.

Today these two opposing views are still in contention, and vie for acceptance.  In the Middle East we find as much diversity among governments concerning church and state as in the West.  Eastern Christian minorities still struggle for equality of citizenship.

Who Really is in Heaven?

There is a devout Catholic lady and good friend that bristles at the following:  Priests, family and friends who comfort the grieving family by telling them everything is alright, that their loved one is in heaven....or that their loved one is smiling at them from heaven.

The truth is only God knows who in fact goes directly to heaven after their immediate death.  We should therefore go on the assumption that our loved one is in Purgatory and help them get them to heaven as soon as possible.  More on how to help the holy souls in future posts.

Omnium fidelium defunctorum

It is our Christian duty and obligation to pray for all the holy souls in Purgatory.  It is not sufficient for us to pray for our dearly departed family and friends.  This is essential since as mentioned above, we have no idea who is in Purgatory and who isn't.  We are also all brothers (and sisters) in Christ and Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor as ourselves.   But we do know that all the holy souls in Purgatory are in need of our assistance as they can no longer help themselves.  Just think about those holy souls who have no one to remember them in pray, let alone have masses said for them to shorten their time in Purgatory.

There are and have been rare circumstances where God reveals to certain holy people, souls who are in Purgatory and needing help.  But again, this is rare.  The rest of us have to pray for the repose of the souls whether the world deems them as great sinners or very virtuous.  An example is given in the book Purgatory that even saintly Monica asked that she be remembered at the altar of the Lord and her likewise saintly son,  Augustine was not content to pray for the repose of his mother, but he asked that his readers not to cease recommending her soul to Divine Mercy.

It is very tempting to judge those we think should be in heaven and those we think belong in hell.  However, until the very last instant of our life, God, Divine Mercy Himself, can save us and wants very much to save us.  We may not necessarily agree with His decisions on where the soul will go, and for that I am grateful that He makes such decisions and not the rest of us.

They say we will be very surprised who we find in heaven.  Let this be a lesson for us to lead an exemplary life so no one will be surprised  if and when they find us in heaven.

Dei judicium est

Faith teaches us that all men dying in the state of mortal sin incur eternal damnation; but who are those that in reality die in that state?  God alone, who reserves to Himself the judgment of the living and the dead, knows this.  As to ourselves, we can but draw a conjectural conclusion from exterior circumstances, and from [even] this we must refrain.  It must, however, be confessed that there is everything to be feared for those who die, unprepared for death, and all hope seems to vanish for those who refuse to receive the Sacraments.
St. Francis de Sales has forbidden us to judge evil of those who have led a bad life.  "With the exception of those sinners whose reprobation is made manifest by Holy Scripture, we may not, conclude that a person is damned, but must respect the secret of God."  This holy and wise saint taught that as "first grace is gratuitous, so also is the last, which is final perseverance or a good death..."

Mass Etiquette: 20 Things To Do And Not Do In Mass

A good list from Aggie Catholics.

The following are things I would also like to point out:

#6.  It is also never appropriate to wear low cut or revealing clothing no matter how fashionable it is.

#11.  Before Mass and after Mass is a time that we should observe holy silence.  But after receiving holy communion should also be a time for sacred silence.  This silence is broken by having to sing a hymn.  It makes it difficult to give thanks to God when you cannot hear yourself think.

#16.  Remember that Jesus is truly present in the consecrated hosts and His precious blood is in the chalice.  Bow down when passing by any other Extraordinary minister of Holy Communion holding a chalice or ciborium during Holy Communion.
