Priesthood Sunday

From the Sacred Heart Church's bulletin today:

On the last Sunday of October each year we honor our priests, who have dedicated their lives to Jesus and His bride, the Church, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We cannot receive the Blessed sacrament, Jesus Himself, without our priests. They sanctify us. Through the celebration of the Mass and through the sacraments they form us in faith, and they serve the parishes and larger community in varied ways. Their desire is to help draw us closer to our Lord and to lead us to eternal salvation.

We are asked to support our priests in prayer, to thank God for the gifts of their priesthood, and to encourage future vocations to the priesthood among our families and in our faith community. For their faithful and loving service, we say THANK YOU to our pastors Reverend Gordy Carvalho, our parochial vicar Reverend Edmund Barut, our sacramental priests Father Paul Smith and Father Joe Grimaldi.

To this we the Spiritual Moms would add...all the priests in the Diocese of Honolulu and all the priests in the entire world.

Prayer

Most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for our faithful priests and bishops,
whose spiritual fatherhood and example of fidelity, self-sacrifice, and devotion
is so vital to the faith of your people.

May our spiritual fathers be guided by the examples of saints Peter and Paul,
all the Apostles, and their saintly successors.
Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all
your people throughout the world.
May the light of your Truth shine through their lives and their good works.

Assist all spiritual fathers, that through your Grace they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of your Truth.
May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them.

On the official day the Church celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Diocese of Honolulu celebrated the closing of the Year for Priest. Thanks to the efforts of the Serra Club International, Honolulu, we were able to show support for our priests and our bishop, in a very special way.

Most Rev. Bishop Larry Silva blessed them on Oct. 12, 2007. The project was sponsored by Serra Club of Honolulu.

The Image shows 30 crucifixes (center), 33 rays symbolizing the importance of Adoration (Monstrance), Holy Eucharist, and Prayers for Priests. It reflects our unity in suffering, joys and light to the world as the Mystical Body of Christ.

Photo of Army Chaplain Celebrating Mass During War - U.S. Army Museum

I took my mom on a walking tour of Waikiki today. We wanted to visit the Blessed Sacrament at St. Augustine.  Unfortunately, because of some incidences, the Church is now closed outside of Mass.

We started walking from one end of Waikiki and ended up at the other end closer to Ala Moana Beach Park.  Toward the end of our walking tour we decided to visit the U.S. Army Museum at Fort DeRussy.  They have the best information on the history of the United States Army from Hawaii's point of view.

I somehow missed the following photo on my last visit.  It appears to be traditional Latin Mass being celebrated during World War II.

As each of us is "King, prophet and priest" we need to initiate and be active for the Body of Christ. Serra Club of Honolulu recognizes that we are all busy people and yet our synergy for our Church leaders will help to strengthen us for the work we have to do in spreading the gospel.

Special Indulgence for the Year for Priests, Decree, Apostolic Penitentiary

All Catholics (both laity, consecrated clergy and religious) are invited to a Celebration of the Year For Priests as declared by Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI beginning June 19 2009 to June 19, 2010.

We would like to begin by inviting as many priests and laity as possible to take advantage of our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI offer of Plenary Indulgences for the 150th Anniversary of the Feast Day of St. John Vianney, Patron Saint of Priests.

On Aug. 4th, Plenary Indulgences will be given to the laity for prayerful participation at Holy Mass, Confessions and devout prayers & good works in accordance with the intentions of the pontiff.

Plenary Indulgences will also be given to priests who will offer Holy Mass, avail themselves to sacramental confessions of the faithful, recite the Lauds or Vespers before the Blessed Sacrament exposed or replaced in the tabernacle

This invitation is to all priests and the faithful to come together in prayerful celebration of the Year For Priests.

Catholic Hawaii - A Priest's Journey From Zambia to Hawaii

Although, I have not personally met Fr. Peter Miti, I have been hearing wonderful things about him as a priest. He is one of four priests recently ordained in the Diocese of Honolulu.

Peter Miti vividly recalls his life in Zambia, Africa. One of 10 children, Peter completed primary and high school in his native country. But all around him, he saw poverty, disease and a deteriorating quality of life for thousands of people in Africa and he wanted to help.

A large part of the problem was HIV and AIDS was taking Africa by storm – neighbors and friends became ill and died, leaving by the thousands, young children parentless, homeless and penniless. Little children were left to fend for themselves and begged in the streets for food and money. Grandparents could only take so many of their grandchildren in, because they also relied on financial support in their waning years from their now deceased children.

Peter had a strong calling to join the Catholic priesthood. He became a member of the Passionists Order in neighboring Botswana in 1995, and worked with AIDS patients. He counseled them on the effects of the disease, how they should prepare for death and what they should do to protect and provide for their children legally and financially in their absence...
