Excessive Abuses in the Use of EMHC

Just as I am rethinking my participation as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, I read the following:

Excessive Abuses in the Use of Lay Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in America

I have noticed that a good number of parishioners prefer to receive Holy Communion from the priest when they have a choice.

I think having such a preference is wrong since they our both valid distributors of the Eucharist.

The problem is the way too many EMHC are used and for the most part could be severely limited. It has lead to the error that to really participate and you have to be doing something to really be participating in Mass. EMHC should really be used mainly for taken Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass.

The parish I attend uses one EMHC and two people can distribute Communion in quite a reasonable time. There is justification for more in a really large parish, but I have seen multiple EMHC used even when it is really not necessary. Especially if there is a Deacon or another priest available.

Actually I would prefer to have Communion at the Communion rail to return. You only need the priest to distribute and it is really quite efficient.

Can't argue with that Jeff. In fact, I agree.
