Jean-François Millet (October 4, 1814 – January 20, 1875) was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. He is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers. Words cannot describe how much I love these paintings, Esther, - all of them. The countryside could just as easily have been an Irish or English one, and I'm sure even in his day Millet's work would have had wide appeal.
The Angelus and The Sower are perhaps the most well known, but I'm so glad to see them all here on Fine Art Friday.

I love Millet's work. The Angelus and The Gleaners area also my two favorites.
I have a small reproduction of the Angelus in my kitchen.
His works speaks of a simpler time yet of hard times too. The peasants of that day had to work grueling hours just to put food on the table.
My great-grandparents would be considered peasants. They immigrated from Yugoslavia and worked very hard just to provide food and shelter for their families. My grandmother was their daughter and was a strong woman. She recently died at 100 years old.

I agree with evann that the Gleaners and the Angelus are 2 of my faves.
I think we all have seen either one of these as children on up..no matter the religion.
I was over on your movie review links and was visiting Sr Rose from Pauline Books and Media.
She gave rave reviews to the book Secret Life of Bees , a novel I read a few years ago which a priest mentioned to me that I would enjoy, and I did.
Has anyone here seen the movie recently or read any Catholic reviews of it?

I have the Angelus hanging in my kitchen! It once hung in the home of my great-grandmother.
